My name is Luisa, I am originally from Colombia, but I have lived in Denmark for more than five years now. I am a physicist with a PhD in Astronomy, that I earned here in Denmark. Currently, I am on my first rotation in the MFT Energy Graduate program, where I am working with the Technology team in Aarhus C, focusing on software development.
Why MFT Energy and the energy industry?
I already had a growing interest in the energy industry and energy trading. A friend told me about MFT Energy’s graduate program, which was great, because I was already looking at graduate positions to start right after I finished my PhD. I applied in January 2023, and was invited to the first interview which went very well, and I was invited to the Graduate Meet up day with other graduate candidates. After this, I came for my last interview, which included a code challenge and a meeting with the CEO.
Despite having other job offers I chose MFT Energy because of the culture and the professional opportunities that the company offers, and, after four months I am convinced that I made the correct decision.
What attracted you to MFT Energy?
The graduate program itself offered what I was looking for: Rotations in three different teams and work areas, flexibility within the program so it can be tailored to my interests and professional aspirations, possibilities to go abroad, and mentorship. The graduate program offers a lot of challenges and responsibilities, accompanied by a steep learning curve, which is what motivates me to grow professionally. The culture, working environment, and the atmosphere I experienced during the recruitment process were also an important factor.
What has been the highlight of being a graduate at MFT Energy so far?
The mix between the projects I have been working on, all the knowledge I have learned, the working dynamic and environment, and my colleagues. I have a very different background coming from academia, so these four months have been full of new experiences and my team has been there to guide me.
What has surprised you the most about working at MFT Energy?
The culture, the eagerness and motivation to reach new goals, and the true flat hierarchy. It is just amazing to be encouraged to talk to anyone in the company. It might be nerve-racking at the beginning to do it, but with time you get used to it.
Biggest challenge as a graduate so far?
Given my academic background within physics and astronomy, these first months have been a steep learning curve. I have been convinced that this is exactly what I want, and I have fully enjoyed it. From learning new coding languages, working on big and important projects, to understanding how to collaborate and communicate in new ways.
What is your superpower?
My superpower is to use my curiosity as a fuel to establish personal and professional goals. When I find something interesting and want to keep learning about it, I dive into it. That is why I did a PhD in Astronomy – so I could understand and contribute to our knowledge about stars. The curiosity and desire to learn about the energy industry was also one of the reasons why I joined MFT Energy, and that too has proven to be a very exciting choice and goal.
Do you have any advice to other applicants?
The most important thing is to be yourself, be honest and clear about your aspirations and intentions for joining MFT Energy. Emphasize your strengths as well but don’t be afraid to mention your weaknesses. If you are invited to an interview, prepare as many questions as you want and don’t be afraid to reach out to those who interviewed you afterwards.
MFT Energy has several international offices and trades energy across many borders.
