Our partnership

MFT Energy & Northium Energy

MFT Energy has joined forces with Northium Energy as a strategic majority investor. Northium Energy develops grid-connected battery energy storage systems (“BESS”) that stabilize the power grid and enable sustainable and renewable energy supply. This is a key part of MFT Energy’s Envision ’28 strategy and the pillar ‘Moving into assets’, leveraging our short-term trading expertise to optimize and trade assets.

Our partnership

This partnership provides Northium Energy with capital to accelerate, expand, and materialize their pipeline, along with key capabilities to maximize BESS revenue via algorithmic trading and optimization. The strategic partnership between MFT Energy and Northium Energy solidifies our position within BESS by combining our strengths.

Why large-scale battery storage is essential

A modern energy system based on renewable power cannot be built without large-scale battery storage. Wind and solar energy are weather-dependent and highly variable, while today’s electricity grids were designed for predictable fossil generation. As renewable capacity expands and electrification accelerates, grids face increasing volatility, congestion, and price spikes – and renewable production must often be curtailed even when consumers need the electricity. Without storage, the build-out of renewable energy simply cannot scale.

Enabling renewable integration at scale

BESS is indispensable as they stabilize the grid by absorbing surplus renewable energy and releasing it when production falls. This ensures the security of supply, reduces curtailment, and supports the integration of far greater volumes of renewable generation. At the same time, storage reduces the need for costly grid reinforcements and helps protect electricity consumers from extreme price fluctuations.

Protecting an increasingly vulnerable power system

Modern societies rely on a highly interconnected, digitalized power system – and this system is increasingly vulnerable. Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and severe, and the risk of human-made disruptions such as cyberattacks and sabotage is rising. Even short outages can have cascading effects across regions, businesses and critical infrastructure.

Strengthening resilience and energy security

Battery storage provides a robust solution by offering fast, local backup capability when the grid is disrupted. In crisis situations, BESS can maintain power to essential services, support local communities and form temporary islanded “mini-grids” until normal grid operations are restored. This added resilience strengthens the overall energy system and reduces the societal and economic impact of outages.

Process

𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Identify suitable sites. With municipal support and a viable grid connection, the project moves forward.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Refine the technical concept, run feasibility studies and engage stakeholders. Grid connection applications are submitted, and permitting begins.

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: Once permits and grid access are secured, the project becomes ready-to-build. Finalize system design, secure system and balance of plant agreements, optimizer agreement, and project financing.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Construction is carried out with experienced suppliers and contractors, ensuring smooth integration with the power grid. The result is a storage asset that ensures a stabilized grid and additional renewable generation even in constrained grid areas.

𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Assets are operated by optimizing dispatch and stabilizing the grid. Value is maximized through active management, trading strategies and advanced in-house optimization tools across the full asset lifecycle.
