MFT Energy has acquired a majority stake in Northium Energy, a Danish developer of grid-connected Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The transaction has been completed and marks an important milestone in MFT Energy’s Envision ’28 strategy and our ambition to expand into physical energy assets.
Northium Energy develops utility-scale BESS projects that play a critical role in stabilizing power grids and supporting a reliable energy system and renewable energy supply. Through the partnership, Northium Energy gains capital to accelerate and scale its project pipeline, combined with access to MFT Energy’s market optimization, algorithmic trading, and market execution capabilities to maximize the value of BESS in power markets.
Moving into assets – expanding MFT Energy’s role in the energy value chain
As renewable energy generation from wind and solar continues to grow, battery storage is becoming increasingly important. BESS solutions enable grid stability, support system flexibility, and allow a higher share of intermittent renewable energy sources.
With this partnership, MFT Energy expands its role in the BESS space by combining battery project development with energy trading and optimization capabilities, which enables value creation across development, operation, and market participation.
“This partnership is a major milestone in our Envision ’28 strategy. By moving into physical assets and combining our market expertise, trading capabilities, and technological foundation with Northium Energy’s strong development platform, we are creating a powerful setup to unlock the full potential of battery energy storage,” says Bo Palmgren, CEO & Partner, MFT Energy.
The partnership will be anchored within MFT Energy’s leadership team, ensuring clear ownership, strong governance, and long-term strategic alignment as the platform scales.
“Developing and operating battery storage assets requires a long-term mindset and a strong alignment between development, markets, and governance. We see strong strategic value in combining Northium’s developer capabilities and experience with MFT Energy’s market insight and trading know-how. After our initial discussions with the Northium team, it quickly became clear that this was the right match. Northium Energy represents a highly compelling platform, and we are excited to support its next phase of development,” says Tore Høffner Andersen, responsible for MFT Energy’s BESS activities and Board Member of Northium Energy.
A partnership built on complementary strengths
The partnership brings together two companies with distinct and complementary capabilities.
MFT Energy contributes deep market expertise across power markets, including intraday, balancing, and ancillary services, supported by strong financial capabilities, operational risk management, and a robust technological infrastructure for data-driven and algorithmic trading.
Northium Energy contributes end-to-end battery project development capabilities, experience with project structuring and divestment, and a strong network within the renewable energy ecosystem.
“Bringing MFT Energy on board as a majority investor is a significant step for Northium Energy. With strong capital backing and best-in-class trading and optimization capabilities, we are well-positioned to scale across markets and fully realize the value of our BESS pipeline,” says Nikolaj Krog Juhl, Managing Director, Northium Energy.
