Meet Johanne, Legal Graduate

My name is Johanne, and I started my role as a Legal Graduate in September 2025.

I hold a Master of Laws from Aarhus University, where I also spent a semester abroad at South Texas College of Law in Houston. Before starting university, I went to business college, which gave me a great foundation for combining legal and commercial thinking later on.

Outside of work, I spend most of my free time with my horses. I’ve been riding for about 20 years – mainly dressage – and I’ve even done a bit of hobby breeding on the side. It’s a big passion of mine and a great way to unwind and do something completely different from my day-to-day work.

What made you make the move to MFT Energy?

Alongside my studies, I worked at one of Denmark’s largest transaction law firms, where I was part of the Renewable Energy team, and I got to work on some exciting projects within green energy and international transactions. This is where my interest in the energy industry started.

At the same time, I wanted to move closer to the commercial and business-driven side of things, rather than staying purely in the legal field. MFT felt like the perfect place to bring those two interests together.

I was really drawn to MFT Energy because it gave me an opportunity to combine two things I’ve been wanting to work more with – the energy industry and the commercial side of business. I’ve always found the energy sector fascinating, especially how it’s constantly evolving and plays such a key role in the green transition.

What are you working on in your current rotation?

I am currently on my first rotation, where I’m part of the Legal team. We work on a lot of different projects, and my tasks are quite diverse. I work with employment agreements, review commercial contracts, and assist with various legal matters that come up across the business. It’s been a great way for me to get an understanding of how the legal function supports the wider organization and to see how legal and commercial considerations tie together in practice.

What has been the highlight of being a graduate at MFT Energy so far?

I might not have been here for a long time yet, but the highlight so far has definitely been the people and the culture. Everyone is really friendly, supportive, and great to work with. It’s a very open environment where you’re encouraged to take initiative, ask questions, and challenge yourself. It is a great place to learn and grow, both professionally and personally.

It’s been really rewarding to see that the work I do actually has an impact and is trusted by the team. I’ve also learned a lot in a short time, which feels like an achievement in itself.

What has been your biggest challenge as a graduate so far?

The biggest challenge so far has been settling into full-time work and becoming a more permanent part of a team. It’s quite a shift from being a student to working full-time, and at times it has felt a bit like being thrown into the deep end and hoping that the “swimming skills” I picked up during university will help me stay afloat and reach the shore. Luckily, I’ve had really supportive colleagues, which has made the transition much easier.

What’s your best advice for someone wanting to join our graduate program?

My best advice would be to stay curious and open-minded. The graduate program gives you a lot of opportunities to learn, but you also have to take initiative and be ready to step out of your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or take on new tasks; people are always willing to help, and you’ll learn a lot by just jumping in.

What should someone thinking of a career in the energy industry know about MFT Energy?

What really stands out to me about MFT Energy is the flexibility. You get a lot of trust and freedom to take responsibility, try new things, and shape your own path. It’s a fast-paced and commercial environment, but at the same time very people-focused and supportive. For me, it’s been a place where I’ve been able to learn a lot, grow quickly, and still have a healthy balance with life outside of work.
